Climbing Kili 4 Kids with Epilepsy

Climbing Kili Team Raises Awareness and Funds with #F2EE

We believe that every child should have the chance to go to school, jump off a diving board, go to summer camp, ride a bicycle or one day, drive a car. Care + Cure is committed to making this possible. Treating epilepsy is a team effort between neurologists, epileptologists, physiologists, surgeons, psychologists and social workers.

Every day these children live with the fear of seizures without an end in sight. Our team wants to join them in this fight for treatments and a cure for epilepsy.

February 21, 2016 we set out on a expedition to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, in efforts to raise awareness and funding for epilepsy treatment and a cure. About our trip:

  • Mount Kilimanjaro is one of the 7 Summits, the roof of Africa, standing tall at 19,341 feet
  • We hike 45 miles through bushlands (think mosquitos), rainforest, heath, alpine desert and the arctic ecosystems
  • This trek will take us 8 days, with the summit in the early hours of the 7th day.

This trek is nothing compared to the day to day struggles of familes with epilepsy.  Please join us in this fight.

Thank you,

Ryan Shaink, Victoria Shaink & Erin Kiehna

Please note: All travel expenses and expedition costs are paid for by the climbers individually to ensure 100% of the donations received go to the cause!

Power of the F2EE story

Picture50-chloe_crop

This is Chloe.

Chloe’s story helped Nico get the best care for his GLUT1 deficiency syndrome and his frequent seizures subsided. Nico and other kids with epilepsy are getting dietary therapy because of Chloe’s story.

When you share your story you will feel less alone. Each story can make a difference. Share your story.

This is Ari.

Ari’s story is helping many children, like Angel, get to specialty epilepsy care in our region. His story is raising money for more pediatric epilepsy specialists and more epilepsy research.

Sharing your story moves the heads and hearts of others to take action and give. Share your story.

Tips+Tools
Promote your F2EE using your story. Share your story using your F2EE.

Here are Tips+Tools for your F2EE and to help you share your story and fundraise for the fight to End Epilepsy led by the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles.

TIP #1. Use these steps for your F2EE.

Step 1. Choose your F2EE event idea. What event makes sense for you — a birthday? a hobby? a purple party? a memorial? Or, perhaps choose a theme inspired by your story? For example, did dietary therapy work for you? If so, your F2EE could feature a low carb menu. Have you benefited from a service dog? If so, your F2EE could be held in a dog park and invite friends to walk their dogs with you. If you enjoyed Studio E Art Therapy, consider inviting others in the group to create an F2EE art exhibit + reception for all your friends. If your event is in honor or memory of someone else, then be inspired by what they loved.

Step 2. Create your F2EE webpage. You don’t have to create a webpage but we think it will greatly help you promote your F2EE! Use your webpage to provide event details and share your story of why this cause matters to you. While you’re at it, don’t forget to set your fundraising goal and the deadline for achieving your goal! This will encourage others to help you reach your goal and will ensure you feel oh-so-good when you surpass your goal! If you surpass your goal early, you can reset your goal higher. And you can certainly set your goal higher for your F2EE next year!

Step 3. Share your story. Share your F2EE event. Sharing is more than hitting ‘send’ or ‘share’ on your keyboard or smart phone. Sharing happens when you tell the story that inspires your F2EE and let others know why this cause matters to you. Photos and videos are powerful ways to tell your story. (A picture is worth a thousand words.) People are interested in your cause but they’re MORE interested in YOU. There is nothing more compelling than someone learning from their life experiences and wanting to give back so that someone else has an easier path.

Step 3. Invite those you know well who are most likely to donate. First invite those closest to you. This will help kick-start your F2EE and get some early donations towards your goal! Remember, success breeds success, and people are more likely to give if others have already given. It’s infectious. So, first invite people who will give and help you spread the word.

Step 4. Then invite your wider circle of contacts. Now you and your close friends can invite a wider circle of contacts to get involved and donate to your F2EE. Tell them your story so they know how and why they should get involved in supporting and promoting your F2EE and your cause!

TIP #2. Use email and social media to spread the word about your F2EE.

Use your F2EE webpage to Email your family and friends OR you can send them an Email with a link to your F2EE webpage and/or attach an invitation. As we all know, Email is the easiest and cheapest way to make sure others know about your F2EE.

Whether on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, social media is a powerful tool to share your story and spread the word about your F2EE. Below are sample posts. Watch for more #F2EE Tools including cover photos and text for your Facebook profile!

TIP #3. Use these approved ways to refer to “Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles” and “End Epilepsy”

For your F2EE, please only use the approved phrases when referring to “Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles” and/or “End Epilepsy” in written material. Please do not use “End Epilepsy” on its own or separately, because it is trademarked by the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles. “End Epilepsy” should only be used together with Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles as in the examples below. Any other usage/phrases should be sent to F2EE@EndEpilepsy.org for pre-approval.

FAQ
  • What does F2EE stand for?

An F2EE is an acronym for Fundraise for the Fight to End Epilepsy. An F2EE is one way we invite you to be part of the fight with us. (The fight to End Epilepsy is led by our Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles and is our trademarked initiative.)

  • What is an F2EE event?

An F2EE is your independent, do-it-yourself event created by you — using your talent in your way and in the place and time of your choosing — to raise funds for the fight to End Epilepsy led by the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles. (An F2EE event should only be used to raise funds for Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles.)

For your F2EE event, you are welcome to use this F2EE online fundraising platform, established by the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles, to make it as easy as possible for you to promote your F2EE event and raise funds for the fight to End Epilepsy led by the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles.

  • Who can create an F2EE event?

Anyone can create an F2EE event. You can too.

  • How does someone create an F2EE event?

Create your own personal F2EE do-it-yourself event using the guidelines, tools and tips on this page.

Create your F2EE event, share your story, and then enlist the help of your friends and family and others to help you, to spread the word and support your F2EE. Enlist the help of others to achieve your goal.

Let us know about your F2EE and we will feature it on this page, in our calendar, and in the Community Connect section of our Enews. We love to feature F2EE events!

  • Why would someone create an F2EE event?

The reason to create an F2EE event is to SHARE YOUR STORY and RAISE MONEY and awareness for the fight to End Epilepsy led by the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles.

In short, the reason to create an F2EE event is to make a difference.

But if you aren’t ready yet — that’s OK. You can get involved another way — Join the End Epilepsy Walk, Volunteer and always Share Your Story.

  • Can I fundraise for the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles?

Absolutely. In fact, the F2EE do-it-yourself webpage is designed to give you, the advocate, a platform to create your own event to fundraise for the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles in leading the fight to End Epilepsy.

  • How do I recognize the EFGLA and End Epilepsy?

See Tips+Tools. You F2EE event flyers and materials should include the same text and format as seen in “Tips+Tools” and the SAMPLE F2EE FLYERS to correctly acknowledge the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles and End Epilepsy.

Please note that END EPILEPSY is a registered trademark of the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles and should not be used except as shown on the SAMPLE F2EE FLYERS.

  • Where does money raised for the F2EE events go?

The funds received from your F2EE fundraiser will support care, advocacy, research and education in the fight to End Epilepsy. At least 90% of F2EE donations will go towards these activities of the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles. For details of our different programs visit Donate.

  • Can I get help with my F2EE event?

By definition an F2EE event is an independent do-it-yourself event where you raise awareness and funds. You can certainly invite help from other volunteers and members involved with our organization. For examples, two families might join forces to organize an F2EE, the members of a Studio E Art Therapy Program might cooperate to create an F2EE, and many more similar ideas.

Because your F2EE is not an EFGLA event and the EFGLA is not liability or responsible for it, you have more freedom and you do not have to ask permission from us as long as you follow the general guidelines and tools+tips included on this page.

  • How do I present about EFGLA and End Epilepsy at my F2EE?

Please let us know about your F2EE event. If at all possible, we will send an EFGLA team member if you would like. We will provide you with an EFGLA video to show and/or handout that you can copy and distribute at your F2EE. We are glad to discuss other ideas with you as well.

  • Is a donation to my F2EE tax-deductible?

If a check or credit card contribution to your F2EE is made payable to the EFGLA then it is tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. The EFGLA is a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization and our Tax ID is 95-2046033.

  • Can I accept cash and checks for my F2EE event?

Many people will prefer to give online with their credit or debit cards, but others may prefer to give using cash or check.

    Checks:
Yes, please instruct donors to make checks payable to:

Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles

Insert your name or F2EE name in check note.

    Then mail to:
Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles
    5777 W. Century Blvd. #820
    Los Angeles, CA 90045

    Cash:
Most F2EE organizers will deposit their collected donations to their bank account and then mail a check to EFGLA. Again, please make sure to note the F2EE name so we can apply the donation correctly to your F2EE.

  • How do I find out about another F2EE and other events organized by EFGLA?

The Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles offers many programs and events throughout the year. Sign-up for our Enews and check our online calendar to see when and how you can join us at our next event! We’ll also feature other F2EE events on our F2EE webpage and in Community Connect in our Enews.
