Dear Siblings,

My name is Maddie and I’m a teenager living in Los Angeles. My youngest brother started having seizures shortly after he was born. and he is not able to walk, talk, and he eats through a G-tube in his stomach.

I am interested in connecting with others, like you, who have a sibling with epilepsy. I am making a video that will combine the videos created by siblings of people with epilepsy. I want the final video to share our points of view and our stories. I want you to be a part of it! I think this will be a great way to connect siblings and remind us that we are not alone and spread epilepsy awareness to show support for our siblings with epilepsy!

Here’s a little bit about my story –Maddie Borman Photo

Given the closeness of our age, when I was younger, it took me time to digest what was truly happening to my little brother and how it impacted our family, good and bad. While his health and making his seizures stop was always my wish, adjusting to people who would stare or make insensitive comments took time. I was really self-conscious, I just wanted to fit in and have a “normal” family.

As I got older, I began to look at his differences as a gift. My brother has taught me so much about sympathy and I now truly look at all people as equal instead of judging based off of differences. He is – without a doubt – the happiest person I know. He never fails to put a smile on my face. I couldn’t imagine my life without my brother having special needs. As much as I would like for him to be able to have a better quality of life, I’m grateful for everything he has done for me and the rest of my family and I’m sure I’m not alone.

I have been privileged to connect with kids like my brother and meet their siblings. I want to make sure that siblings of people with epilepsy can find a way to share their stories and know that other people are in similar situations. I want siblings to feel support knowing that they are part of a larger group.

Please share your story on video with me –

I am going to make a video of a large group of siblings telling their story.  I want it to include you.

Before recording your video, check out the guidelines below! Please email me if you have any questions!

Sincerely,
Madeline
